Negotiation is so much more than asking for something. The list below includes some of our favorite tips to execute a successful execution:

  1. DO YOUR HOMEWORK: Do the digging and prep work to figure out what your position is worth. You can locate information from searching online and through speaking to recruiters. Spend some time asking yourself what you want and what you need. There are so many inputs you can consider here, from reporting lines, bonuses, equity, and time off.
  2. CONFIDENCE IS KEY: Do you believe you’re worth what you’re asking for? Employers want to keep you and will want to hire you if you’re at the offer stage! Employers expect a negotiation and often have room to increase your compensation.
  3. NEGOTIATE LIKE A CHAMP: Don’t overshare. They won’t want to pay more than they need to. Use silence to your advantage. The first to speak loses and shares more information. Ask for more than you want (within reason) so that you have room to negotiate. By throwing out the initial number you are anchoring the negotiation.
